Identify the epidermis which consists of keratinising stratified
squamous epithelium. Identify the various layers of the epidermis
starting with the deepest layer(stratum basale or germinativum). Can you
identify the stratum spinosum which consists of polyhedral cells with
large pale nuclei? Still higher is the stratum granulosum consisting of
a layer of cells containing dark purple keratohyalin granules. Is there
stratum lucidum - an eosinophilic structureless area in your slide? The
most superficial layer is a thick structureless stratum corneum. In the
dermis or hypodermis, look for sweat glands. Can you identify Pacinian
corpuscles? Below the dermis, locate adipocytes(fat cells), blood
vessels and nerve bundles. Also identify the Meissner's corpuscles in
the dermal papillae.
