Contemporary Issues in Global Health

(7th -18th January 2008)

What are some of the issues comprising global health priorities in the 21st century?
Why are some diseases characterized as “neglected” diseases?
What tools are available for monitoring and evaluating a program or project?
What makes a strong program design?
What are the necessary components of a strong proposal?
How do we know if our program is working?
How should we conduct a final evaluation?
Who are the major donor agencies in public health?

Contemporary Issues in Global Health (Module One) participants are now well-equipped to not only answer these questions, but go one step further: design a thoughtful, innovative program and incorporate it into a well-written proposal.

With Module One providing an in-depth overview of global as well as regional public health priorities, the stage was set for students to embark on a hands-on, skill-building workshop (Module Two: Design, Monitoring and Evaluation of Health Programs). Divided into three groups, students chose to tackle TB in Uttar Pradesh Province, India, HIV and AIDS in Yunnan Province, China, and Maternal and Child Health in Bihar Province, India.

With a month-long process condensed into a five-day intensive module, students worked hard to design program goals, objectives, and activities. Although, or perhaps, because the schedule was so demanding, the final results were impressive. Interventions were well-conceived and mindful of local context. One of the two course lecturers commented that, with some fine-tuning, the three proposals were worthy of donor approval.

Coordinated by A/Prof Annelies Wilder-Smith, the course drew upon the expertise of lecturers Dr. Sri Chander from World Vision International and Dr. Milton Amayun from International Aid.
