Scholarships & Financial Assistance

MPH Scholarships and Awards

Prospective students may wish to apply for one of the following awards:

(1)  Full fee waiver and stipend for living allowances

a. The NUS ASEAN Scholarships
b. The Bull Run Study Awards (for countries in ASEAN)
c. The Lee Foundation MPH Scholarship
d. The Master of Public Health Graduate Scholarships

(2)  Full fee waiver

a. The Saw Swee Hock MPH Scholarship (for Singaporeans and permanent residents)
b. The Master of Public Health Graduate Scholarships

(3)  Partial fee waiver of up to 40% of tuition fees (for international students, on the basis of financial need)

Singaporeans and permanent residents should also take note of scholarships offered by philanthropic organizations for full-time postgraduate study. Click here for links to some of the scholarships currently available.

Terms and conditions of scholarships are subject to change at the dicretion of the Selection Committee.

Scholarship / Award Application Procedure

Application procedure

Prospective candidates should indicate at the time of application that they wish to be considered for these scholarships (Section F of the application form).

Selection will be on the basis of:

- an excellent academic record

- potential to make a significant contribution to public health in his/her country and intended area of work.

Provisions of the Scholarship

Each scholarship will provide for the following:

- Tuition, health insurance, examination fees and other approved fees payable to NUS throughout the period of the award;

- For international students:

  • A monthly stipend of S$800.00
  • Cost of economy travel directly from the home country to Singapore on award of the scholarship
  • Cost of economy travel directly from Singapore back to the home country on successful completion of the course of study leading to the award of the degree.
  • A one-time book allowance of S$1,000.00
  • A travel subsidy of up to S$800.00 for any compulsory overseas field trips in the course of the program.

The scholarship is awarded initially for two semesters or the equivalent of an academic year. For candidates on a two-year program, the scholarship will normally be extended for an additional two semesters, with the proviso that the scholar's performance in the previous semesters is satisfactory (maintain a minimum CAP of 3.5 or should not have my grade below "C" for any module/subject). The Selection Committee may terminate an award if the progress or conduct of the scholar has not been satisfactory.

There is no bond or obligation for the scholar to be employed by NUS or in Singapore. The scholar is, if not a Singapore resident, expected to complete the MPH program and return to the home country.

No award will be made unless there is a candidate of sufficient merit.

The scholarship may not be held concurrently with any other award.

Details of payment, reimbursement and other conditions:

Initial award of scholarship

 Overseas Scholars must initially arrange and pay for the following items (retain the original receipts, etc.) and submit the Claim for Reimbursement/Payment Form (download at the end of this page) after being registered for the designated graduate degree:

(i) Fare/ticket for economy travel by the most direct route from the home country to Singapore, by aircraft, train, ferry, etc.;

(ii) Expenses relating to overseas field-trips during the course of study

The claim for reimbursement may be submitted to the MPH office after registration, on the prescribed form.

The NUS Student Bill will be directly debited to the Scholarship Fund only after the recipient has registered for the degree. The items that are approved in the Student Bill would include fees for tuition, registration, student activity, medical and personal accident insurance, examinations, compliance with copyright law and the use of academic-related facilities.

The book allowance and stipend will be debited directly to the scholar’s bank account.

Continuation and extension of scholarship

The Scholar must comply with the average full-time course workload and maintain a minimum CAP of 3.5, with no grade below "C" for any module/subject At the end of each semester the examination results must be submitted to the MPH Scholarship Committee. The Committee may terminate an award if the progress or conduct of the scholar has not been satisfactory.

Where extenuating circumstances do not allow the scholar to complete the course of study within the prescribed period, he/she may request to extend the scholarship beyond the minimum period. The extension is subject to his/her performance in the previous semesters and will normally be granted only in exceptional cases.

Completion and award of degree

 The following items (retain the original receipts, etc.) will be reimbursed to the scholar, only upon completion and award of the designated graduate degree and return to the home country:

(i) Fare/ticket for economy travel by the most direct route from Singapore to the home country, by aircraft, train, ferry, etc.; &

(ii) Tax (non-deductible/non-refundable) for travel from Singapore.
