Research ExcellenceThe University Researcher Awards organised by the Office of Research was established in 1997. These awards are given out annually to recognise outstanding staff achievement and to stimulate quality research in the University. They are open to all Faculties, Schools and University-level Research Institutes/Centres. University Outstanding Researcher AwardThe ORA is awarded to researchers based on their impact and strong research track record in their area of expertise. The successful researcher must have consistently achieved peaks of research excellence over a period of time and should be recognised by the academic community as having achieved significant breakthroughs or outstanding accomplishments in his field. Outstanding Researcher Award 2006 - Prof LEE Eng HinProf Lee Eng Hin, from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is a pioneer in the study of mesenchymal stem cells for the repair and regeneration of chondral (articular cartilage) defects in adults and physeal (growth plate) defects in long bones of children - now at the stage of clinical application. They spent the past 8 years working together, trying to understand the mechanism(s) underlying the regulation of apoptotic signalling by intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), and are the first team of researchers to show the divergent effects of intracellular superoxide and hydrogen peroxide on apoptotic signalling in cancer cells. Their efforts have shed light on fundamental mechanisms governing and regulating cell death, which could have tremendous implications in the understanding of carcinogenesis and drug resistance in cancer therapeutics. They have also redefined the role of intracellular ROS in cancer cell death and survival. Read more in NUS University Awards Roll of Honour - A/Prof Shazib Pervaiz and A/Prof Marie Clement »
University Young Researcher AwardThe YRA is conferred to researchers below 40 years of age based on their potential impact in their respective areas of research. Young Researcher Award 2007 - Assoc Prof MELENDEZ, Alirio JAssoc Prof Alirio J Melendez, from the Department of Physiology has identified SPHK1, a novel sphingosine kinase which serves as a potential target for drug development against allergic and inflammatory diseases. His research on SPHK1 has also paved the way for therapeutic strategies against immune-related diseases such as bronchial asthma.
