2010 Admissions - Exceptional Individual Scheme (EIS)

Rationale

The Exceptional Individual Scheme (EIS) was developed as a way of exercising discretionary criteria in admitting a small number of students to the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Applications submitted through this route will be evaluated by the Selection Committee on the basis of exceptional talent and achievement in addition to academic excellence.

Application Process

You must first apply for admission to NUS and pay the application fee through the Office of Admissions. The application for admission is available at http://www.nus.edu.sg/oam/apply/apply.html.

You must indicate Medicine as your first course choice. When you successfully submit an online application to the NUS Office of Admissions, you will be given an Application Number, which you must write on your EIS application form. All students applying with a Polytechnic diploma must apply through the EIS.

If you have not applied for admission to NUS through the Office of Admissions, or if you have not indicated Medicine as your first choice in your application, you cannot be considered for Medicine under the EIS.

Deadlines

The NUS application for admission must be submitted to the NUS Office of Admissions by the appropriate deadline. The EIS form with all required documents must be submitted to the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine by 1 April 2010.

Selection Process

Your application for admission will first be considered under the "normal route" by the NUS Office of Admissions. If your University Admissions Score is above the cut-off point for Medicine, you will be shortlisted and invited for interviews and you will no longer be an EIS candidate.

If you do not meet the cut-off point set by the NUS Office of Admissions, then and only then will your application be considered under the EIS. In other words, there is no disadvantage to applying under the EIS. There is no harm in trying it; in fact, you will be spared the short time-frame of putting together your portfolio by the deadline, because your EIS application will serve as your portfolio.

Students shortlisted under the EIS by the Selection Committee will be invited to partake in interviews and tests along with students who were shortlisted via the traditional route.

If shortlisted, students who submitted an EIS application will not need to submit a portfolio.

The documents for the portfolio (two letters, personal statement and resume) will be extracted from the EIS application.

A small number of outstanding students will be offered admission, for up to 10% of the 2010 intake. The decisions of the Selection Committee are final.

Application Form

To be considered under the Exceptional Individual scheme, complete the application form and attach the required supporting documents:

  1. A letter of nomination from one of the following:
    1. your Junior College, or last school attended
    2. a registered charity (includes religious organizations)
    3. an agency such as the National Arts Council, the Singapore Sports Council, the Singapore National Olympic Council, the Singapore International Foundation, or the National Council of Social Services
  2. A second letter of recommendation from someone, not related to you, who knows you well
  3. An official testimonial from your junior college or high school
  4. A personal statement (one page, reader-friendly font). Please tell us about experiences that have shaped your desire to study medicine. Specific details will be more effective than vague generalities. If you have applied to Medicine previously, please tell us what you have been doing since then. If you are enrolled in university, please discuss your current course of study and why you wish to change to Medicine.
  5. A resume or list of your extracurricular accomplishments (one page, reader-friendly font). These activities may be school-related or outside school, such as community service, activities related to religious or cultural organisations, interest in the arts, or employment.
  6. Copies of your educational certificates. If you are enrolled in university, you must attach a copy of your transcript thus far.
  7. Copies of relevant certificates or letters supporting your extracurricular achievements.
