Development of Programmatic Research in the Medical Faculty
NUS has a clear mission to excel in teaching and research and to contribute to Singapore's development. In line with this vision, and with our relatively small pool of research talent, the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine intends to promote Programmatic Research as part of the strategy to develop internationally competitive areas of research excellence.
Main Objective
The main objective is to build on the individual expertise and capabilities currently present in our Faculty to form strong research teams which can make a greater impact and be more competitive internationally.
Specifically, it is hoped that Programmatic Research will:
- Provide a critical mass of researchers working in common areas of interest, with a platform for exchange of ideas and expertise.
- Provide the academic and research milieu whereby young researchers, including graduate students and aspiring clinician-scientists can receive comprehensive research training.
- Maximize sharing of specialized equipment and other resources required for specific areas of research.
Formation of Programmes is entirely on a voluntary basis. The main components are as follows:
- There must be a minimum of 3 Principal Investigators with their own grant funding and who are working in similar or complementary areas of research.
- A Programme Coordinator should be nominated by the group.
- The group must be committed to meet regularly, share expertise and equipment.
- The group should be prepared to host new investigators joining the Faculty, with the requisite expertise in the group's research area. These new investigators will be provided with start-up funds, while their major grant applications are being processed.
- Registration of Programmes will be conducted by the Dean's Office, Section of Research. The registration forms are enclosed (Annex A) (Word: 35KB) and should be returned to the Dean's Office.
- The Programme Coordinator should provide the Dean's Office, Section of Research with a brief annual report of the Programme's activities and output for the year in the format as shown in Annex B (Word: 22KB)
Benefits of Forming Programmes:
- Increase in critical mass to enhance the quality and quantity of the research efforts.
- Maximize use of resources, especially highly specialized equipment.
- Eligibility for competition for new laboratory space in the Clinical Research Centre*.
- Eligibility for competition for a limited number of research scientist posts when available.
- Faculty support for selected block funding requests to funding agencies such as NSTB, etc.
- Successful Programmes can apply for Faculty Centre status.
*Individual Principal Investigator will also be eligible to compete for new laboratory space but allocation will be based on the track record of the PI or research programme and on the scientific strength of the work proposed.
