Faculty's Commitment

The Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine was first established as the Straits and Federated Malay States Government Medical School in 1905. In 1912, it was renamed King Edward VII Medical School, in recognition of a gift of $120,000 from the King Edward VII Memorial Fund. Substantial academic expansion took place and the name was further changed to King Edward VII College of Medicine in 1921 to reflect its status as an academic institution of university status. In 1949, the college amalgamated with Raffles College to form the University of Malaya. This later became the University of Singapore and in 1981 became the National University of Singapore.

In 2005, when NUS celebrated its centennial anniversary, the Yong Loo Lin Trust made a transformational gift of $100 million dollars to the Medical School, which was similarly matched by the Government. The gift will provide funding to recruit and retain top faculty as well as to develop new infrastructure and state-of-the-art facilities. The enhanced resources will accelerate the development of multi-disciplinary research as well as help foster academia excellence.

Today, the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine is a faculty of the National University of Singapore and it offers one of the finest undergraduate medical programmes in the Asia-Pacific region. The School's long tradition of medical education, research and healthcare has contributed significantly to Singapore's success as a regional medical centre of excellence.

Undergraduate Education: Degrees Offered

Overview of M. B.,B. S.

The undergraduate medical programme is a five-year course leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.,B.S.).

Some of the key highlights of the undergraduate medical curriculum are:

  • introducing undergraduates to patients in their first year of study
  • devoting 20 per cent of curriculum time to problem-based learning
  • integrating teaching and assessment to outcomes

Major subjects include:

Year 1: Human Biology
Year 2: Human Disease; Health & Disease in the Community
Year 3 to 5: Clinical Topics and Clinical Practice

Overview of Bachelor of Science (Nursing)

The B.Sc. (Nursing) programme follows the National University of Singapore's modular system. The course includes the following subjects:

  • Nursing Sciences
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Pathophysiology
  • Pharmacology
  • Immunology
  • Microbiology
  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Critical Thinking and Analysis
  • Healthcare Law and Ethics
  • Healthcare Management and Education
  • Research and Statistics
  • Evidence Based Practice
  • Clinical Skills
  • Clinical attachments in local hospitals/institutions, etc.

Fourth year Honours students will be expected to complete a research project and modules such as Advanced Research Methodology and Statistics, Evidence-Based Practice and Management.

The NUS B.Sc. (Nursing) and the B.Sc. (Nursing) (Honours) programmes are designed to complement the Diploma in Nursing offered by the Nanyang and Ngee Ann Polytechnics.

Currently, the majority of Singapore nurses are prepared at Diploma level with knowledge and skills consistent with entry level safe nursing practice. However, the outcomes and competencies of a graduate nurse will meet and exceed those of a diploma level nurse in the areas of management of care outcomes, coordination of health care activities to promote quality care outcomes and clinical reasoning guided by evidence-based practice.

Undergraduate Education : Special Programme

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP)

The Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine is committed to train outstanding doctors to serve the community and patients with care and integrity. We strive to establish the School as a centre of research excellence. To achieve this, a key approach is to develop and nurture our students to meet the research challenges of the 21st century.

A research programme called the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP) is available for our medical undergraduates. Undergraduate research in non-clinical and clinical departments, under the supervision of faculty staff, is usually conducted during the vacation period in the First to Third year curriculum. The clinical departments also offer opportunities for research in the Fourth and Fifth year curriculum.

Such participation can be included in the Elective Posting schedule. Students who participate and contribute in UROP will have due credits endorsed in their final year academic transcripts. In addition, research projects of excellence may be submitted for consideration for research prizes awarded by the School.

Undergraduate Education : Financial Assistance and Awards

NUS is committed to a needs-blind merit-based admission policy that ensures no deserving student admitted to the University is denied an education because of financial difficulty. To fulfill this commitment, a Student Financial Aid Unit has been set up within the Registrar's Office to provide a visible and integrated approach to assist students with financial difficulties or concerns.

Toh Kian Chui Scholarship/Bursary

The Toh Kian Chui (TKC) Memorial Fund is established through an initial donation of $2 million by Ms Toh Keng Choo, in memory of her late father, for the award of study and travelling bursaries to the undergraduate students in the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

Fok Chu On Family Bursary

A retired businessman who is currently residing overseas has made an annual expendable gift of $420,000 to set up the Fok Chu On Family Bursary for needy medical and nursing students.

The fund will support three eligible medical students and four eligible nursing students throughout the entire duration of their studies. It will be awarded each year on a per cohort basis.

NUS Outstanding House Officer Award

Book prizes will be awarded to Top Performing House Officers during the annual House Officer Orientation. The Most Outstanding House Officer will receive both the book prize and a plaque.
