“It is only by persistent intelligent study of disease upon a methodical plan of examination that a man gradually learns to correlate his daily lessons with the facts of his previous experience and of that of his fellows, and so acquires clinical wisdom.” - Sir William Osler, 1902

Course Introduction

Clinicians are well placed to identify gaps in knowledge that are relevant to the causes, diagnosis and treatment of disease, and to conduct research that will make a significant impact on patient care.

The NUS Master of Clinical Investigation Program was developed by the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine in consultation with the Ministry of Health, senior clinician- researchers from various hospitals and research funding agencies. It has been designed to meet the needs of clinicians in healthcare institutions who desire to incorporate scientifically sound research into their clinical practice.

The goal of the program is to equip clinicians with the basic methodologic and practical skills to design and conduct clinical investigations that are relevant to patient care. These include studies aimed at evaluating :

  • new treatments and technologies,
  • diagnostic modalities,
  • mechanisms of human disease,
  • determinants of disease outcomes, and
  • effectiveness of health services.

The MCI program will also provide the foundation for those who may wish to pursue advanced clinical research training, including that leading to a PhD degree.
