Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is the Master of Clinical Investigation (MCI) a new program?

Yes, the Master of Clinical Investigation (MCI) is the latest Masters program launched by Division of Graduate Medical Studies, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The first intake commenced in August 2008.

2. Is it compulsory for students to propose a research supervisor?

Yes, students are required to nominate their research supervisors, who should be an established clinical investigator with a track record in doing research.

3. Will the topic of research be assigned to the students?

Students can choose to do research on any area/topic according to their interest.

4. Are the classes for part-timers carried out in the evening?

Both coursework I and coursework II will require six weeks of full-time study. All classes are carried out during office hours, while some of the continual assessments and examinations are conducted on Saturday mornings. Part-timers will need to take time off (study leave, etc.) from their institutions.

5. What is the difference between full-time and part-time students?

Full-time students are required to complete the curriculum requirements within 1 academic year, while part-time students will have a choice of completing the curriculum requirements within 2 or 3 academic years.

6. Can the credits earned in this program be used for exemption to other program/ PhD degree?

Generally, only modules that have not been used towards another degree at NUS or elsewhere may be considered for credit transfer (NUS modules) / exemption (Non-NUS modules). Such modules must be at level-5000 and above, relevant to the degree programme to which the candidate seeks admission, and read less than 5 years before the date of admission. 7. Is there any scholarship available?

To promote clinical and translational research in Singapore, the Ministry of Health will be providing scholarships (supported by the National Research Foundation) for outstanding trainees who are interested in enrolling in the MCI programme. The scholarship is open to trainees who are Singapore citizens or permanent residents and are currently undergoing specialist training. Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria will automatically be considered for the scholarship. Specialists and those who have completed postgraduate Family Medicine may also apply for the scholarship, but their applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

8. Can students read 2 degrees at the same time?

Unless granted approval by the University, no student may concurrently be a student for more than one degree or register as an NUS student and of another university/institute.

9. Do I need to be medically registered with Singapore Medical Council (SMC)?

It is not a requirement for foreign students to be registered under SMC, however they have to be registered under their home country medical council. Singapore students need to be registered under SMC
