POSTGRADUATE MEDICAL DEGREES -
INFORMATION FOR FOREIGN APPLICANTS

1. MASTER OF MEDICINE

The Master of Medicine offered by the Division of Graduate Medical Studies (DGMS) is based on 2 to 3 years of training in an approved hospital and examinations. Generally, there is no coursework as such. Candidates receive on-the-job training as in the UK system. For some specialties foreign candidates need not be trained in Singapore hospitals. They may be admitted to the MMed examinations on the basis of training outside Singapore. Except in Occupational Medicine / Public Health, DGMS does not conduct or offer any hospital-based training programmes or formal coursework.  However, 1- 3 week revision courses for candidates prior to the examinations are available. The Occupational Medicine / Public Health programmes require candidates to undertake 1 year full-time coursework in Singapore.

The Master Medicine degree is offered in the following specialities :

 Anaesthesiology  Ophthalmology
 Diagnostic Radiology  Orthopaedic Surgery
 Emergency Medicine  Ortorhinolaryngology
 Internal Medicine  Paediatric Medicine
 Obstetrics & Gynaecology  Psychiatry
 Occupational Medicine  Public Health
General Surgery  Family Medicine (for doctors practicing in Singapore only)

For details on training and examination requirements, please refer to the respective handbooks/guides available at DGMS.  Please note that in most of the above specialities, candidates must pass a primary examination prior to attempting the Final MMed examination. The MMed (Surgery) Part I serves as the Part I for Orthopaedic Surgery and Ortorhinolaryngology.

2. CLINICAL POSTS IN SINGAPORE HOSPITALS

DGMS does not arrange for such clinical posts or employment in Singapore hospitals. Foreign doctors have to enquire directly with the training hospitals. They should note that registration to practice in Singapore is under the purview of the Singapore Medical Council. The Master of Medicine degree does not automatically qualify the holder for medical registration to practice in Singapore.
