POSTGRADUATE MEDICAL
DEGREES -
INFORMATION FOR FOREIGN APPLICANTS
1. MASTER OF MEDICINE
The Master of Medicine offered by the Division of Graduate Medical Studies (DGMS)
is based on 2 to 3 years of training in an approved hospital and examinations.
Generally, there is no coursework as such. Candidates receive on-the-job
training as in the UK system. For some specialties foreign candidates need not be trained in
Singapore hospitals. They may be admitted to the MMed examinations on the
basis of training outside Singapore. Except in
Occupational Medicine / Public Health, DGMS does not
conduct or offer any hospital-based training programmes or formal coursework. However, 1- 3 week revision courses for candidates prior to the examinations
are available.
The Occupational Medicine / Public Health programmes
require candidates to undertake 1 year full-time coursework in
Singapore.

For details on training and
examination requirements, please refer to the respective handbooks/guides
available at DGMS. Please note that in most of the above specialities,
candidates must pass a primary examination prior to attempting the Final MMed
examination. The MMed (Surgery) Part I serves as the Part I for Orthopaedic
Surgery and Ortorhinolaryngology.
2. CLINICAL POSTS IN SINGAPORE HOSPITALS
DGMS does not arrange for such clinical posts or employment in Singapore
hospitals. Foreign doctors have to enquire directly with the training
hospitals. They should note that registration to practice in Singapore is
under the purview of the Singapore Medical Council. The Master of Medicine
degree does not automatically qualify the holder for medical registration to
practice in Singapore.

3. SCHOLARSHIPS
a) NUS ASEAN GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP (AGS)
This scholarship is open to all ASEAN* nationals, except
Singaporeans/Singapore PR. The AGS enables a successful scholar to pursue
full-time coursework in Public Health and Occupational
Medicine. Details are available from DGMS.

b) LEE FOUNDATION/TAN SRI DR RUNME SHAW FELLOWSHIP IN ORTHOPAEDIC
SURGERY/HAND & RECONSTRUCTIVE MICROSURGERY
The Fellowship will cover a six-month clinical attachment at the Department of
Orthopaedic Surgery, National University Hospital or the Department of
Orthopaedic Surgery, Singapore General Hospital. The training can be in (i)
Orthopaedic Sugery (ii) Hand & Reconstructive Microsurgery. Applicants must be
from developing countries and must have some experience in these two
specialities. There is no degree or diploma awarded on completion of training.
(Candidates on Scholarship should liaise with DGMS on type of entry
permit/visa and temporary medical registration matters.)
4. SHORT REVISION COURSES FOR MMED EXAMINATIONS
These are short 1- 3 week revision courses to specifically help candidates
prepare for their examinations; and may also be of general interest. These are
usually held 3-4 weeks before the examinations. Any physician can enroll,although priority is given to those taking examinations.
5. DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES
DGMS offers part-time Diploma programmes in
Dermatology, Geriatric Medicine, Occupational Medicine and Family Medicine for
doctors (mainly GPs) practicing medicine in Singapore. Only the Dermatology
Diploma is open to doctors practising outside Singapore. Diplomas are not specialist or registrable qualifications in
Singapore.
6. POSTGRADUATE MEDICAL DEGREES BY RESEARCH
Candidates wishing to obtain a postgraduate degree (MSc, MD or PhD) by
research only should contact the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine or Registrar, NUS
directly.
7. ACCOMMODATION IN SINGAPORE
DGMS will refer full-time foreign students to NUS student hostels. The
candidates have to make direct arrangements with the hostels themselves.
Doctors attending short courses and examinations are advised to seek hotel
accommodation instead.
8. IMMIGRATION
It is the responsibility of the foreign applicants/course candidates to
contact the relevant Singapore Embassy/High Commission for visa requirements.
They should allow sufficient time for issue of visa. For short revision
courses and MMed examinations, candidates should apply for a visitor visa.
Only Full-time students (eg Occupational Medicine/Public Health candidates) are eligible to apply for a student visa; this is
usually done upon arrival in Singapore. The Immigration Department in
