Eligibility Criteria:

The following entry requirements must be met by the closing date:

  1. An acceptable basic medical degree
  2. A pass in FRCSEd Part 1 & Part 2 or FRCSEd Part A or Part 1 FRCOphth or ICO Part 1 exam or a registered Resident in any 1 of the 3 Residency Programmes in Singapore

Format

The Refraction Assessment will be a 30-minute, patient-based assessment of objective and subjective refraction. It will also include related skills such as muscle balance, understanding of optometric and orthoptic devices. Each candidate is allowed 15 minutes to examine the patient before being observed and graded by 2 examiners. This is to test candidates' ability to perform clinical refraction on a patient.

Applicants are required to submit an online application, via DGMS Online System for Course Applications (OSCA): https://medworks.nus.edu.sg/osca/home.aspx

All applications and fees must reach DGMS by the closing date as stipulated above. Late or incomplete applications will not be entertained. The following documents must be submitted together with the application:

  • 1 passport-sized photograph (400 by 514 pixels)
  • Certified true copy of following documents (Official English translations will be required for stamps or certificates sent that are not in English):
    • Basic medical degree certificate (MBBS)
    • NRIC : for locals / Permanent Residents
    • Employment Pass and Passport : for foreigners (residing in Singapore)
    • Passport : for foreigners (residing outside Singapore)
    • Certification of successful completion of FRCSEd Part 1 & Part 2 or FRCSEd Part A or Part 1 FRCOphth or ICO Part 1 exam (For candidates who are not in any Residency training programmes in Singapore)

Photocopies of certificates and/or official translations (in English)* including any other offical supporting documents will be accepted only if they have been prepared and/or authenticated by one of the following:

  • the issuing University or Medical School;
  • Medical Council of which you are registered and licensed to practice
  • Government Ministries of Health;
  • a notary public or Justice of the Peace;
  • Division of Graduate Medical Studies (DGMS) - For authentication by DGMS office, original certificates and documents must be produced.

* Candidates must submit an authenticated translation if their official supporting documents is not in English. A fresh ink stamp must be used to authenticate the copy or translation of the primary medical qualification.

Candidates who fail to present their original documents for verification without acceptable reasons will not be admitted to the examination.

Candidates whose original documents have been damaged or misplaced must apply to the relevant organizations / authorities for replacements or letters of verification.

DGMS is not obliged to give any reasons for unsuccessful applications.

Withdrawal Policy:

If candidate decides to withdraw after placement is confirmed, he/ she must write in to DGMS.

  1. If written notice of withdrawal is received before the acceptance of placement deadline, a refund, less the application fee will be made.
  2. If written notice of withdrawal is received after the acceptance of placement deadline, or the candidate fails to attend the examination for any reason, no refund will be administered.

  2. Successfully passed FRCSEd Part 1 & Part 2 or FRCSEd Part A or Part 1 FRCOphth or ICOPart 1 examination or should be a registered Resident in any 1 of the 3 Residency training programmes in Singapore

Format:

The OSCE comprises:

  1. 5 Clinical Stations of 10 minutes each in:
    1. Anterior
    2. Posterior
    3. Motility
    4. Visual Fields/Pupils
    5. External Eye
  2. 5 Static Stations of 10 minutes each in:
    1. Orthoptics/ Low vision aids
    2. Retinal Imaging/ test
    3. Glaucoma imaging/ test
    4. Cornea imaging/ test
    5. Instruments

  2. Passed Primary MMed (Ophthal) exam, i.e. FRCSEd Part 1 & Part 2 or FRCSEd Part A or Part 1 FRCOphth or ICOPart 1 exam, Refraction Assessment and OSCE

    Format:

    The Final MMed (Ophthal) comprises 2 parts as shown below.
