Postgraduate Programmes

The Department offers projects leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees by research and coursework.  The excellent infrastructure, vibrant research environment, exciting research programmes and professionalism of our staff attract both local and international students aspiring for intellectual growth.  Graduate students have opportunities to learn cutting-edge technologies and to interact with faculty and visiting scientists.

Postgraduate Programs PhotoAdmission into our Graduate Programme is based on guidelines established by the University. The requirements for admission with research scholarship are a relevant Bachelor’s degree with Honours (at least second class) or the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery or the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery and the ability to pursue research in the candidate’s proposed field of advanced study. As the medium of instruction is English, applicants whose native tongue or medium of undergraduate instruction is not English must submit TOEFL scores as evidence of their proficiency in the English Language. Exemptions will be given to applicants with distinctions in the Cambridge GCE O-level examination English Language Paper 1119. The minimum TOEFL score required is 580.

Applicants (except NUS and NTU graduates from relevant disciplines who have met the admission requirements) must also submit GRE scores to support their application. A minimum total GRE of 1200 for both Verbal and Quantitative sections and a minimum of 3.5 for Analytical section are recommended.

Applicants who have not met the normal admission requirements should accumulate at least two years of relevant working experience at time of application to be considered under the 10% discretionary admission category. At the discretion of the School Admission Committee, additional requirements may be imposed on applicants.

The Joint Master of Science programme in Infectious Diseases, Vaccinology and Drug discovery was jointly established by the National University of Singapore (NUS) and the University of Basel (UB), Switzerland together with the Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD) and the Swiss Tropical Institute (STI).

For the inaugural intake in 2005, seven students were selected to join the programme. In 2007, ten students were enrolled and we plan to reach a maximum of twenty students for the 2009 intake.

The Programme
The programme comprises 18 months of formal teaching and research work. For the 2007 intake, students spent the first 4 months (September to December 2007) in Basel, Switzerland for taught courses before moving to NUS for their research projects. They get to work on real-life applications to help develop new drugs or vaccines against important disease threats including dengue and tuberculosis.

What the Students will Learn
Students will obtain a comprehensive insight into the basis of infectious disease, infection biology, epidemiology, and the strategies of vaccine design and drug discovery. Lectures and tutorials complement research projects undertaken within leading laboratories in NUS and NITD.

Degree
Upon completion of the programme, successful students will receive a joint MSc degree from NUS and UB.

Application and Deadline
Students may apply for this course when they have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree (with Honors) in Biology or a related subject such as Microbiology or Immunology, or have successfully completed a degree course in Medicine.

The next intake shall be in 2009. Please log onto our website third quarter of 2008 for application details.
