Research Interest

Research in this group focuses on innate immunity. Earlier work emphasized on host recognition of carbohydrate structures on microbes using lectins including collectins and ficolins, leading to microbial killing and clearance. More recent work focus on microbial interaction with macrophages and dendritic cells and how these cells employ phagocytic and Toll-like receptors (TLRs) for pathogen capturing and sensing. We are intensely interested in how phagocytic receptors and TLRs cross-talk to modulate the immunostimulatory and tolerogenic properties of dendritic cells. Through comparative studies, we investigate the molecular basis of macrophage and dendritic cell functional heterogeneity at different differentiation and activation states. On-going projects include:

  1. Mechanisms of TLR co-operation and activation
  2. Phagocytic receptor signalling in dendritic cells and macrophages
  3. Autocrine regulation of immunostimulatory and tolerogenic properties of dendritic cells
  4. Dendritic cell-based vaccine adjuvant development
  5. The regulatory roles of C1q
