Brief Biography |
| Dr.
Matthew Gwee is currently a Professorial Fellow in the
Department of Pharmacology and Interim Director, Medical
Education Unit, Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Gwee is also an
Associate Director, Centre for the Development of Teaching and
Learning (CDTL) and a Member of the University Committee on
Educational Policy (UCEP), National University of Singapore. Dr.
Gwee previously served as Chairman of the faculty’s
Problem-based Learning Committee (1998-2004), Head of
Pharmacology (1987-1997) and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of
Medicine (1980-1992). |

Major Interests |
|
Currently, Dr. Gwee’s major interest is in 'Best Evidence
Medical Education' (BEME) aimed at promoting best teaching
practices informed by current evidence derived from educational
research. Dr. Gwee’s main interests in medical education
include: problem-based learning, student-centred learning,
co-operative small group learning and curriculum and course
planning. Dr. Gwee is actively involved in promoting excellence
and professionalism in medical education through faculty
development programmes conducted within the faculty and beyond.
Dr. Gwee obtained his Master of Health Personnel Education (MHPEd)
degree from the University of New South Wales, 1981.
Recently, Professor Gwee published a Chapter (Chp.7:
Problem-Based Learning in Medical Education: Curriculum Reform
and Alignment of Expected Outcomes) in the book "Enhancing
Thinking through Problem-based Learning Approaches" (Ed. Oon-Seng Tan; pp. 117-131, 2004, Thomson Learning, Singapore). |

Interests |
- Pharmacological studies on venoms and toxins from scorpions,
stonefish and snakes in collaboration with the NUS Venom
and Toxin Multidisciplinary Research Group.
- Pharmacology of nitric oxide and peripheral nitrergic
transmission involving the nitric oxide synthase-cGMP transduction
system
