GEK2501 Understanding your medications (GEM 4MC)
Prerequisites Open only to 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students.
Preclusions 1st year students and those in medicine, dentistry and science that have taken any pharmacology module.
Workload 23 lecture hours + IVLE hours
How medications/drugs work to alleviate symptoms and heal illnesses continue to fascinate the population at large.

This module will introduce students in the humanities to the general principles of drug actions that underpin their therapeutic applications. The first step to Understanding Your Medication begins with the understanding the normal functions of the human body (physiology) follow by an introduction to the science of drug action (pharmacology). Pharmacology consists of 2 major areas: pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. In dealing with the therapeutic applications of drug actions, examples of commonly used drugs (over-the-counter and prescription) for specific disease states will be discussed, and their possible side-effects highlighted.
