Undergraduates

Third and Fourth Medical Year Paediatric Posting

Objectives of Paediatric Posting

  1. To recognise and manage common paediatric problems.  This involves the ability to elicit a satisfactory clinical history, conduct comprehensive physical examination, request and interpret laboratory tests, diagnose and manage a defined range of paediatric conditions, including acute emergencies.  The emphasis is on identification of problems and their solution.
  2. To acquire a working knowledge of growth and development of a child and the part the genes and the
environment play in this.  Knowledge includes that of the child's physical, social, mental and psychological
    needs.
  3. To understand various aspects of preventive paediatrics and to be able to play an active role in promoting child care.

Lecture Notes on IVLE (Student intranet)

These lecture-notes aim to provide students a comprehensive knowledge of common paediatric problems which will encountered in general and hospital practice. The emphasis is on BASIC PRINCIPLES and PRACTICAL APPROACH to problems rather than on specific disease entities.  Students are expected to acquire a knowledge of specific diseases on their own by reading standard text books.

Paediatric Case Workbook on IVLE (Student intranet)

This case workbook will consist of case scenarios of common paediatric problems and have been organised according to the systems to be studied.  They will form the basis for discussions during the interactive sessions. Before attending the interactive sessions, students are expected to (i) have read the lecture notes on-the-web, and/or the relevant chapters of the recommended textbooks; (ii) have worked through the case studies.

Final Medical Year Paediatric Posting

Programme for Paediatric Posting

  1.  Interactive sessions will systematically revise the main systems and approaches to clinical problems, the recognition and management of emergencies, and basic therapeutics.  These interactive sessions are aimed to consolidate the students’ knowledge of clinical paediatrics, and will not be in the form of didactic lectures.  The group representative must contact the tutors in charge of each session to discuss their involvement in preparation and participation.
  2. Small group tutorials: Each student group will be under the charge of 3 tutors per group for the entire 2 week posting.  Each tutor will take their charges in one tutorial group every week.  Students will be assessed on short cases and/or long cases, so that there will be 3 tutorials per week.  Students will contact their tutors to arrange for a date and time for their tutorials.
