Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome)

This is the commonest trisomy. 50% of all children with Down syndrome have a heart problem. Of these 50% will have patent ductus arteriosus, atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect or tetralogy of Fallot. The remaining 25% will have an atrioventricular septal defect.

The cardiac prognosis is generally the same as the normal population. Their overall prognosis may however be determined by the associated problems may of these children have.

Trisomy 18 (Edward Syndrome) & 13 (Patau Syndrome)

The common cardiac anomalies associated with these conditions include VSD, PDA, PS, valve dysplasia and dextrocardia.
