Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome)
This is the commonest trisomy. 50% of all children with Down syndrome have a heart
problem. Of these 50% will have patent
ductus arteriosus, atrial septal
defect, ventricular septal
defect or tetralogy of Fallot.
The remaining 25% will have an
atrioventricular septal defect. The cardiac prognosis
is generally the same as the normal population. Their overall prognosis
may however be determined by the associated problems may of these children
have.
