Dr Manuel Salto-Tellez is Associate Professor (with tenure) in Pathology at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS), as well as Assistant Dean for Research. He is also Senior Consultant Pathologist in the National University Hospital (NUH-Singapore), Senior Research Scientist at the Oncology Research Institute (ORI-NUS) and Director of the Diagnostic Molecular Oncology Centre (NUS/NUH).

He attended Medical School at the Universities of Oviedo ( Spain ), Aachen (Germany) and Leiden (The Netherlands), partly supported by grants from the European Union. He specialized in Pathology at the University of Edinburgh (UK), receiving his MRCPath in 1998 and FRCPath in 2006. He subspecialized in Gastrointestinal Pathology in St Mark's / Northwick Park Hospital in London (UK, 1998-1999), and in Molecular Pathology / Molecular Diagnosis at UPENN (USA , 2000).

Dr Salto-Tellez is author or co-author of more than 80 articles, including basic science work in journals such as Cancer Cell , Nature Genetics, Cancer Research, Cell Death and Differentiation, FASEB Journal and Oncogene , and translational/molecular diagnostic work in journal like Clinical Chemistry , American Journal of Gastroenterology or Journal of Molecular Diagnostic . He presented a similar number of published abstract in international conferences. Dr Salto-Tellez is also a regular, invited speaker both regionally and internationally. He is co-author of the book Talbot, Price and Salto-Tellez's Biopsy Pathology in Colorectal Disease.

His areas of diagnostic interest are gastrointestinal pathology and molecular diagnosis. His areas of research interest include the discovery and validation of novel molecular biomarkers of disease, the validation and technology transfer of novel discoveries into the molecular diagnostic practice and the molecular pathology of the RUNX family of genes. He collaborates regularly with the Spanish general press explaining scientific matters to the public.

Dr Salto-Tellez holds grants for more that $3million, including generous support from A*STAR/Singapore Cancer Syndicate for the establishment of a Diagnostic Molecular Oncology Centre.

As a medical student, Dr Salto-Tellez was awarded the Erasmus Prize of the European Union. More recently, he was awarded the Courage Star in 2003 (Singapore), the 2005 - Eminent Scientist of the Year Award by the International Research Promotion Council (IRPC), and the 2007/2008 NUS School of Medicine Faculty Research Excellence Award.
