The department offers training to eligible individuals in various areas.

For Medical Students

Medical students may apply for an elective posting in the C-L division. During this posting he/she will learn how psychological problems of medically ill are handled in a hospital setting. This will give them an opportunity as a participant observer to help them decide to make future career choices in psychiatry.

Paramedical Personal

Only paramedical workers who are qualified in their own field of work will be trained. This is designed to train for specific skills for example a course in suicide risk assessment in potentially suicidal medical or psychiatric patients. This may be useful for persons (e.g. nursing, social workers, counselors etc.) working in various areas in or out of hospital, associated with high suicide risk.

General Practitioners

Practicing doctors may join the C-L team for a period of about 2 months to help them deal better with the psychiatric problems in patients tin their own practice. It may help practitioners who were trained long before to upgrade their skills in handling psychiatric problems as they are seen in general patients. This course focuses on the basic skills in screening for psychiatric problems and managing psychiatric problems.

The Medical officers

Medical officers who have not joined the postgraduate psychiatric program have the option of joining a 3-month introductory course or a six-month basic course in C-L psychiatric. The basic training program is designed for postgraduate psychiatric trainees who have at leat one year experience of working in a psychiatric unit and will enable them to assess psychiatric problems and deal with common psychiatric problems in medically ill patients.

Advanced training program

Those who are in advanced post-graduate training program, or those who are qualified psychiatrists may join the advanced C-L program. This is designed to prepare them to run a C-L unit independently. The program is of 2 years duration and includes teaching, service and research components.
