The heightened state of arousal as a result of the secretion of stress hormones causes great psychological distress leading to severe anxiety, panic, apprehension, undue worries, poor concentration, sleep disturbance, nightmares, and irritable mood states.
The common mental illnesses are anxiety disorders and depression. Alcohol abuse or dependence is now more common.
Overwhelming work stress or marital discord
can result in depression. Many depressed teenaged girls resort to drug overdose
in the face of relationship problems.
